Come create the technology that helps the world act together

Nokia is committed to innovation and technology leadership across mobile, fixed and cloud networks. Your career here will have a positive impact on people’s lives and will help us build the capabilities needed for a more productive, sustainable, and inclusive world.

We challenge ourselves to create an inclusive way of working where we are open to new ideas, empowered to take risks and fearless to bring our authentic selves to work.

The team you’ll be part of

Our Business Group is a leader in wireless mobility networks and associated services. With more than 3.500 patent families essential for 5G we have a strong 5G portfolio and are a front runner in open and virtualized radio access networks (O-RAN and vRAN).

Our 5G Layer1 (L1) Software  team in Espoo is looking for talented developers to implement software with hard real-time requirements for Nokia’s 5G base station products. Our responsibility area covers the full chain of embedded and real-time software development cycle, from early requirements analysis to final delivery to our operations and customers. Join us in shaping the future with our next generation baseband, with exposure to Nokia’s cutting-edge System on Chip (SoC).

L1 / Layer1 is the Physical Layer of networks according to the OSI model. Our team is developing embedded software, which together with the hardware chips makes up the Layer1 part of the signal processing chain. We are responsible for the baseband processing for Nokia’s 4G and 5G products. Those products go directly to our customers, primarily telecom providers, which use them to serve millions of people with 4G/5G networks. Layer1 is especially important, because it is the first line of defence against data errors which occur when signals are transmitted over the air. Data can be protected and recovered with a series of signal processing operations, which our team is implementing. In addition, our software needs to be highly optimised to serve as many users with as fast speeds and as low power consumption as possible, and with hard real-time processing requirements.

We are hiring a Senior L1 (PHY) Software Technical Leader!

What you will learn and contribute to

We are a large team of around 100 persons working on Layer1 SW in Espoo alone! We are split into smaller specialized scrum teams, each in charge of a combination of areas below.

Depending on your background and interests, you could work in one or more of them:

  • Digital signal processing
  • Code optimisation
  • Feasibility studies of 3GPP 5G features, drafting requirements
  • Planning and organising the work as part of global SW development teams
  • Feature implementation (C and/or C++)
  • Creating and maintaining the platform, DevOps, enabling continuous integration (Docker and Python)
  • System design and architecture
  • Testing (unit, component, and integration)
  • Interface adaptation, testing and troubleshooting tool development, SW co-verification with Matlab models, build time optimization, maintaining good SW practices

Although a combination of communications engineering/DSP knowledge, as well as software development is highly appreciated, we encourage you to apply if you have good skills, knowledge, and interest in any of the areas mentioned above. We will strive to support you so that you can learn more about 5G/L1 on the job. We are interested in skilled  C/C++ developers, as well as python developers. We are a highly diverse team, and it is quite possible to find a good fit for a talented candidate in any of those areas.

This is an excellent opportunity to work with talented and supportive colleagues on challenging problems. Your colleagues will range from enthusiastic juniors to seasoned experts in multiple fields. We often get feedback that the great colleagues and culture are the best part of working at Nokia! You will be able to develop your knowledge and skills while working on one of the most state of the art and disruptive technologies.

Your skills and experience

You are proactive and independent. You have great communication skills that allow you to feel comfortable in a team and to motivate colleagues. Our language at work is English, so you are fluent enough. You enjoy learning and continuous improvement.

Additionally, you share our values that build our company culture.

Guiding qualifications:

  • You have demonstrated industry experience in the areas of software development and/or radio technology
  • You understand the significance of good SW practices for high quality SW
  • You know the benefits of agile SW development and Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery practices
  • You have strong experience in C/C++ or Python: development and testing

We also appreciate the following:

  • Experience with Matlab and Linux development environments
  • Knowledge of processor architectures, signal processing, embedded systems, and real-time systems
  • Experience in implementing wireless protocols, especially LTE and NR

What we offer

Nokia offers flexible and hybrid working schemes so you can work from wherever in Finland you feel the most comfortable, continuous learning opportunities, well-being programs to support you mentally and physically, opportunities to join and get supported by employee resource groups, mentoring programs and highly diverse teams with an inclusive culture where people thrive and are empowered.
