Job Description

The Nokia Bell Labs Solutions Research Laboratory has the mission to design and develop massively disruptive solutions and systems that accelerate innovation and create industry leadership. We are responsible for designing, building, integrating and delivering novel and best-in-class solutions and experiences that leverage the Bell Labs Research assets and innovations across multiple complex technology areas. The group innovates and onboards Bell Labs Research to create systems, solution platforms and human experiences into trial-ready prototypes that showcase Nokia Bell Labs thought leadership in future experiences.
 
The Solutions Research Laboratory has an opportunity for an embedded software development / sensor technology trainee to join in our lab in Tampere for fixed-term internship. We are looking for a highly motivated developer to join an experienced team working on one of our projects in the sustainability area. As part of this team you will investigate relevant environmental sensor technologies, develop new hardware/firmware (HW/FW) prototypes, and contribute to the implementation of research concepts to near commercial maturity. Ideally you are about to finalize your MSc studies soon, and the position may offer options for a diploma thesis work.
 
 
Job Responsibilities & Competencies
 
  • Work together with team of experienced software developers in Tampere to:
    • Build hardware/firmware prototypes using different hardware development boards and sensor technologies.
    • Perform measurements, e.g., on sensor accuracy and energy consumption.
    • Implement data visualization solutions to display measurement data in different ways.
    • Contribute to the concepting, design and implementation of novel Internet of Things (IoT) devices and associated end-to-end solutions.
  • Interface with UX designers and other software / hardware design and development teams.
  • Collaborate with other Bell Labs research teams towards the integration of research assets and joint innovation solutions.
 
Qualifications
 
  • The successful trainee candidate shall have excellent track record in studies in computer science, software engineering, embedded systems development, or related fields. 
  • The candidate must be enrolled as a full-time student.
  • The candidate shall possess strong practical skills in low-level software development, especially with C and C++ programming languages.
  • The candidate should have a good understanding and practical experience with popular real-time operating systems such as FreeRTOS or Zephyr OS.
  • The candidate must have been involved in at least some embedded systems / embedded software projects in the past.
  • Excellent familiarity with the Linux operating system and Linux based software development is required.
  • Familiarity with hardware development (e.g., in the form of personal HW hobby projects or “maker devices” using different development boards) would be highly beneficial.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML technologies such as TensorFlow is a plus.
  • Skills in web backend development (especially Node.js), user interface development and web-based data visualization libraries such as Chart.js or D3.js are considered an advantage.
 
  • Additional requirements:
    • Knowledge of agile software development techniques.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Proactive nature and willingness to learn.
    • Ability to work independently while also contributing to team-oriented projects in a highly dynamic, geographically distributed environment. A successful candidate will be versatile, flexible and hands-on.
