The team you’ll be part of:
Nokia Bell Labs is the world-renowned research arm of Nokia, having invented many of the foundational technologies that underpin information and communications networks and all digital devices and systems. This research has produced nine Nobel Prizes, five Turing Awards and numerous other awards.
The Network Security department of the Bell Labs Networks, Services and Security Research lab is offering a position for an experienced security research scientist for its team in Espoo and Munich. You will be a member of the Network Security department which is responsible for analyzing and researching the security aspects of all kinds of current and future information and communication systems as well as developing novel innovative and potentially disruptive security concepts and solutions. As a high performance researcher you will have the possibility to identify, define and conduct extensive fundamental scientific security research & innovation in a highly collaborative environment.
 
What you will learn and contribute to:
•    Identifying, defining, conducting, and managing relevant security research topics and projects in your areas of expertise which is at least one of:

  • Cryptography, information theory and data privacy (theory and technologies)
  • Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning for security (theoretical and practical)

•    Self-guided scientific research with the goal of defining innovative concepts and solutions; related high-quality scientific publications at top security events
•    Saving own research for Nokia by creating intellectual property rights (patents)
•    Extended networking, consulting, and driving co-operations with internal and external security communities with a focus on the European ecosystem (academic research, industry and governmental organizations like BSI or ENISA)
•    Presenting own and other research by representing Nokia Bell Labs Security Research in internal and external events
•    Act as a professional advisor and mentor for junior researchers.
 
Your skills and experience
•    PhD (or at least close to PhD finalization) in computer science, telecoms, electrical engineering, or related field as well as a proven scientific record
•    Professional expertise in the area of security with knowledge of the market, competition, and academic environment
    Being a dedicated expert with in-depth knowledge and recognized publications who is well connected to the external scientific security community in one of Cryptography, Data privacy, Machine Learning for network security, specifically with expertise in at least several of the following:


•    Cryptography, information theory and data privacy (theory and technologies)

  • Quantum-safe cryptography, efficient crypto implementations
  • Understanding (theoretical and practical) of quantum computing focused algorithms and their impact on security choices, current and future
  • Privacy enhancing technologies (e.g. homomorphic encryption, differential privacy,…)
  • Automatic privacy optimization: balancing intended goal of analytics (e.g. ML) versus privacy & anonymity as well as data minimization principles
  • Solid development and implementation capabilities, e.g. C++, Python, hardware/GPU acceleration of computations

•    Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning for security (theoretical and practical)

  • Theoretical knowledge and understanding of current machine learning models used in the industry, and their security concerns (deployment, structure, mathematics…), specifically on multi-agent based models, e.g. Reinforcement Learning, Federated Learning
  • Practical skills at implementing novel machine learning models, in modern, industry languages (Python, C++,…)
  • Applications of machine learning models to security focused problems (IDS, traffic monitoring,…), with practical implementations and proof of concept work
  • Dedicated background (theoretical and practical) in computer science and machine learning, with good academic track record in the field

    
Know-how and experience of security application domains like 5G mobile networks, Industrial IoT, or other critical infrastructure are welcome
Experienced in public co-operations in the context of science forums, industrial or governmental organizations
Capability to leverage collaboration options of a mixed environment giving access to Nokia product lines technology and market reality as well as outstanding innovative concepts and disruptive research at Nokia Bell Labs
Excellent presentation skills and ability to adapt the communication to the needs of the audience.
