Come create the technology that helps the world act together

Nokia is committed to innovation and technology leadership across mobile, fixed and cloud networks. Your career here will have a positive impact on people’s lives and will help us build the capabilities needed for a more productive, sustainable, and inclusive world.

We challenge ourselves to create an inclusive way of working where we are open to new ideas, empowered to take risks and fearless to bring our authentic selves to work.

Join an energetic research team at Nokia Bell Labs

Nokia Bell Labs is the world-renowned research arm of Nokia, having invented many of the foundational technologies that underpin information and communications networks and all digital devices and systems. This research has produced nine Nobel Prizes, five Turing Awards and numerous other awards.

The Agile Data Processing Systems research team within Nokia Bell Labs is looking for a motivated new team member. The team focuses on creating new technologies for the creation, expression, deployment, execution, and dynamic optimisation of stream intensive applications (IoT/M2M/Industry4.0). These services, which span different types of interactions (real time data & event streams, protocol interactions, database interactions, …), require extremely high flexibility both in terms of programmability, customization & deployment as well as adaptability to the (live) real-world context.
You will be part of a highly skilled research team of computer scientists and engineers that works closely with the Nokia business units on new long term technologies that have the potential to disrupt the company’s product roadmaps.
The research team has created the World Wide Streams platform (see www.worldwidestreams.io) and continues to research beyond this. The team has started several internal Ventures based on its research.

What you will learn and contribute to

We are looking for a strong and passionate researcher to join us in our research on distributed stream processing and analysis (for both data and video streams).  You will create novel approaches for the programmability, deployment and run-time adaptation to real-world contexts of distributed stream processing systems.

As a researcher at Nokia Bell Labs, you

  • Advance the state-of-the-art and create disruptive new technologies where state-of-the-art falls short.
  • Create proof-of-concept demonstrators and publish, present and convince others of your work.
  • Create new intellectual property through patents, research platforms, prototypes, libraries, …
  • Work with Nokia business units to transfer knowledge, challenge current practices, and to consult on expert knowledge.
  • Formulate and validate the value of your work in an Industry4.0 context.
  • Acts as prime reference in your field of expertise in close cooperation with business units, academic and industrial partners.

Your skills and experience

Solid research experience in one or more of the following fields is a plus

  • Data Stream processing, streaming analytics, query languages, data-flows
  • Distributed systems, (secure) partitioning techniques and replication strategies, operator placement, run-time adaptation & optimization
  • Digital automation for Industry 4.0 based on real-time data/audio/video processing
  • An interest in video processing & analysis is a bonus

Position Requirements

  • You have a PhD degree in Computer Science/Software Engineering.
  • You have a proven track record as a researcher in at least one of the domains above. You have publications at quality conferences.
  • Capability to conduct research from conceptualisation, SW prototyping up to writing patents & publications.
  • You have demonstrable programming skills and you have experience with building software involving a combination of open source frameworks and libraries.
  • You can express yourself fluently in English, both verbally and in writing.

Location: Antwerp (Belgium)
