Come create the technology that helps the world act together

Nokia is committed to innovation and technology leadership across mobile, fixed and cloud networks. Your career here will have a positive impact on people’s lives and will help us build the capabilities needed for a more productive, sustainable, and inclusive world.

We challenge ourselves to create an inclusive way of working where we are open to new ideas, empowered to take risks and fearless to bring our authentic selves to work.

The team you'll be part of

Nokia Bell Labs is the world-renowned research arm of Nokia, having invented many of the foundational technologies that underpin information and communications networks and all digital devices and systems. This research has produced nine Nobel Prizes, five Turing Awards and numerous other awards.

The Bell Labs Fixed Networks Department is looking for a researcher in the field of optical access. The Fixed Networks Department is part of the world-leading Nokia Bell Labs research center and has expert teams located in Antwerp, New Jersey, and Stuttgart. It is the proven innovation engine for next generation Fiber-To-The-x (FTTx) access technologies (i.e., the last mile of the telecommunication network). The team aims to create innovations in communication technologies, resulting in record breaking technology assets with potential to enhance Nokia’s product portfolio.

What you will learn and contribute to

Are you passionate about solving problems?
As part of our team, you will:

  • Master the understanding of next generation fixed (optical) and mobile converged access networks including related architectural network challenges
  • Employing techniques in resource allocation, computer science, digital signal processing, machine learning, timing protocols, optimization theory, and others to create groundbreaking innovations to build future deterministic and intelligent access networks
  • Being able to analyze and spot relevant innovations and determine their relevance for business
  • Develop novel concepts and build the framework to test these concepts

As a researcher at Nokia Bell Labs, you:

•    Define creative “out-of-the-box” solutions to complex theoretical and experimental problems (be able to diverge)

•    Distil the proper elements and take a strong position towards a single game-changing solution to the original problem (be able to converge)
•    Create new intellectual property through patents, simulators, hardware research platforms, and publications in scientific journals and conferences
•    Act as prime reference in your field of expertise in close cooperation with Nokia business lines, academia, customers and other industrial partners.
•    Work independently and effectively as part of a diverse multi-site team
•    Continuously learn, master and create new, leading-edge technological innovations

Your skills and experience

You have:

  • Knowledge of and affinity with telecommunication systems and technologies
  • Demonstrated significant research innovation/results through journal papers and/or industry recognition
  • Storytelling with data: strong skills in building the case for change, drawing on data and analytical techniques where appropriate, and communicating this to audiences
  • Knowledge on resource allocation and scheduling algorithms, timing and synchronization protocols, deterministic, converged and disaggregated networks
  • Background on network diagnostics and monitoring from optical to protocol level
  • Digital Signal Processing in the field of telecommunication (e.g., equalization, modulation, filtering, error correction, LMS algorithms)
  • Hands-on experience with simulation tools and programming languages (e.g., MATLAB, Python, C/C++) as well as FPGA board programming
  • Additional background in RAN, CloudRAN, Industry4.0 is welcomed
  • Experience with experimental lab setups and high-end test equipment is a plus

In addition:

•    Applicants should hold, or be expected to hold, a PhD in (applied) engineering or computer sciences, physics, mathematics, or an equivalent qualification
•    You are a quick learner
•    You have a positive and open mindset and have strong drive to succeed
•    You enjoy theoretical deep dives as well as application-oriented work
•    You are stimulated to conduct research autonomously while contributing to team-oriented projects in a cooperative and expert-rich environment
•    You are fluent in English and a good communicator in a multi-disciplinary team
