The team you'll be part of

Nokia Bell Labs is the world-renowned research arm of Nokia, having invented many of the foundational technologies that underpin information and communications networks and all digital devices and systems. This research has produced nine Nobel Prizes, five Turing Awards and numerous other awards.

Bell Labs Quantum Research is a part of the AI Research Lab, which has a long tradition of excellence in research and currently consists of 80 staff members with expertise ranging from computer science to experimental condensed matter physics. Our Quantum Research team has an active program to study non-Abelian properties of correlated 2-dimensional electron states and develop these systems into topological qubits. This effort has a long history at Bell Labs dating back to the discovery of the fractional quantum Hall effect, demonstration of composite fermion Fermi surface formation, discovery of the candidate non-Abelian state at 5/2 filling factor, and more recently demonstration of non-Abelian properties at 5/2 and 7/2. The effort at Bell Labs benefits by a close collaboration with Princeton University where the highest quality 2D electron heterostructures are grown. These materials are processed at Bell Labs Murray Hill where measurement devices such as surface gate structures that form interferometers are designed and applied to the heterostructure, taking advantage of our in-house e-beam and photo-lithographic surface processing and imaging, as well as materials deposition capabilities. Low temperature measurements are performed at Murry Hill in one of our many wet or dry dilution refrigerators. Our highly collaborative team works with theorists at the University of California, Riverside, and University of California, Santa Barbara, and Microsoft Quantum. 

What you will learn and contribute to

You will work with and learn from world experts in topological quantum computing and contribute to our current path toward the realizaiton of a topological qubit. Both the fundamental studies of non-Abelian systems and their potential employment toward qubits are valued outcomes. You will be expected to work both independently on your own research as well as closely with teammates towards common goals. You will have the opportunity to gain experience in both measurement and materials processing. The successful applicant will:

  • Conduct high quality research in topological quantum computing and its applications, both independenly and as a team
  • Be an active member of the quantum computing community and related fields, and improve over current state of the art methods 
  • Present research findings through papers and oral presentations both within the organization and to the external research community
  • Produce quantifiable demonstrations of your research and file patents on your inventions
  • Actively participate in new and challenging application areas that arise in the analysis and optimization of communications and networking systems

Your skills and experience

 You have:

  • A PhD (or in the final stages of a PhD program) in condensed matter physics or related field
  • Experimental experience with cryogenic systems and measurements

It would be nice if you also had experience with:

  • Dilution refrigerator operation
  • Topological quantum systems
  • Lower dimensional electron systems 
  • Heterostructure growth, processing, and small-signal measurement 
  • Micro-fabrication and characterization techniques
