Requirements

  • Masters or PhD in Engineering or Physics, specializing in photonics or optical communications.
  • 10+ years’ product development in optical communication technologies, with extensive experience in test automation and new product introduction
  • Fluent in English
  • Canadian citizen located in Ottawa

Desired Skills

  • Excellent analytical skills, with demonstrated ability to research and solve complex technical problems
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Familiar with product development processes, and proven ability to work within constraints of schedule commitments and deliverables
  • Experience interfacing and interacting with production facilities, such as SMT, optical sub-assembly, sub-system and module assembly, functional test, with a good understanding of production processes and yield optimization
  • Experience using MATLAB for simulation, test automation and analysis, with a good understanding of procedural and object-oriented programming
  • Experience with laboratory equipment, such as OSAs, vector analyzers, BERT, DCA, and similar equipment, and the construction and automation of laboratory test setups
  • Experience characterizing and modelling optical devices, with a deep knowledge of photonic integration, free-space optics, devices and related materials and their properties: DFB, DBR, EML, MZM, APD/PIN, TIA, EDFA/SOA, TFF/FBG/AWG, PLC, MEMS, III-V materials and Silicon Photonics
  • Good understanding of modulation formats, such NRZ, RZ, Duobinary, QAM, BPSK, DP-QPSK, etc., frequency chirp, coherent reception, signal encoding/decoding, forward error correction and framing
  • Knowledgeable on device calibration and control system design
  • Good understanding of statistical analyses and communication theoretic principles, including receiver sensitivity, analog and digital filtering, OSNR, chromatic dispersion, eye diagrams and ISI, noise and impairment modelling and analysis, fiber nonlinearities (XPM, FWM, SBS, SPM), and polarization-dependent effects
  • Familiar with standards and protocols, such as OTN, SONET, CPRI, Ethernet, MPLS and TCP/IP
  • Familiar with PON technologies, such as EPON, GPON, XGS-PON and TWDM-PON
  • Good understanding of thermal modelling principles, including thermal resistance, heat capacity, thermo-electric coolers (TEC), equivalent thermal circuit modeling and heatsink modelling
  • Familiar with reliability principles and modeling, such as FIT and MTBF calculations, and accelerated life testing
