Head of Network Architecture Research
About Bell Labs Core Research
Bell Labs Core Research will lead the innovative research focused on the current Nokia Business Group Portfolio for both the short and long-term excellence and will drive the future portfolio for the Nokia BGs. This research will drive commercialization through the Nokia BGs in our current markets. This unit will work closely with Bell Labs Solutions Research.
About Network Architecture Research
The goal of the Network Architecture Research lab is to drive network architecture innovations across multiple network layers and across all network segments, including access, metro, transport and data centers. By taking a new, more integrated approach to the design of future network architectures, the lab is expected to identify new opportunities for monetization, performance differentiation, and total-cost-of-ownership optimization. Thanks to a deep understanding of industry trends and nodal technology roadmaps, the research will anticipate paradigm shifts like cloudified networks, programmable networking, and new deployment models, like network-as-a-service. The research will analyze their potential impact, which will inspire the design of new disruptive network architectures and concepts. The architecture level research is expected to give guidance for detailed research on system and devices in the rest of the Bell Labs Core Research organization.
Mission/Purpose of role
The goal of the Network Architecture Research lab is to drive network architecture innovations across multiple network layers and across all network segments, including access, metro, transport and data centers. By taking a new, more integrated approach to the design of future network architectures, the lab is expected to identify new opportunities for monetization, performance improvement, and total-cost-of-ownership optimization. The scope covers architecture innovations on a medium term in the 5G era, as well as long term, clean-slate architecture blueprints for the 6G era.
The architecture level research is expected to define directions for detailed research on system and devices in the rest of the Bell Labs Core Research organization.
Main Responsibility Areas
The Head of Network Architecture Research is responsible for leading a team of experienced, mostly senior research architects with diverse network technology backgrounds. S/he sets the overall direction of the research and drives the team to create a network architecture vision for the future. S/he stimulates the creative generation of new concepts towards network architectural disruption for the medium and long term that distinguishes the work by her/his team from more development-oriented efforts on architecture design and road mapping in other parts of Nokia. S/he interacts with the key interfaces described below to achieve effective research collaborations with other parts of Bell Labs and to drive an effective transfer of concepts to the business groups.
Key Interfaces
The Head of Network Architecture Research interacts with the following people and functions in Nokia:
- Other lab leaders in Bell Labs Core and Solutions Research to inspire new network system and devices concepts, as well as solutions for new applications, based on network architecture innovations.
- Other S&T functions, including Technology Leadership, Strategy, Strategic Partnerships, and Nokia Standards to understand and align on technology roadmaps and industry trends.
- S&T functions and architecture leads in the BGs to understand and influence the medium and long-term product strategy and roadmap in a way that enhances the overall network monetization/performance.
