About Bell Labs Solutions Research

Bell Labs Solutions Research leads innovative research focused on new Nokia value chains and opportunities beyond the current Nokia BG Product and Solution Portfolio for both the short and long term, including new market spaces, internal incubation, technology licensing and possible “spin out” opportunities. This unit works closely with Bell Labs Core Research and other organizations in Nokia Strategy and Technology to drive fundamental and applied research to grow and expand Nokia’s position into new technology and business domains and ecosystems.

About Software and Data System Research Lab

The Software and Data Systems Research (SDSR) Lab is one of the research labs within the Bell Labs Solutions Research organization and identifies, researches, and creates world-class software and data system technologies that will fuel an innovation pipeline for Nokia’s business units, internal incubation, and spin-out value creation channels. The research lab has a global footprint and investigates a diverse set of research topics, which include advanced data processing systems, AI/ML systems and tools, mobile and pervasive computing, emerging software principles and methodologies, software for cyber-physical systems, and automated network operation. The lab is at the forefront of building a digital ecosystem and driving several technology partnerships with players in a broad spectrum of verticals. The SDSR Research Lab is intimately connected and works closely with the other research labs across Bell Labs Research (including Bell Labs Solutions Research and Bell Labs Core Research) to drive ground-breaking research that will lay the foundation for the world of 2030 and beyond.

About Autonomous Network Software Research Department

The Autonomous Network Software Research Department is part of the Software and Data Systems Research Lab and is responsible for driving research to create fully autonomous infrastructure solutions. These infrastructures run with minimal to no human intervention. They deploy, configure, monitor, optimize, and maintain themselves—with precision, at low cost, instantaneously. To achieve this goal, the team is creating innovations in the areas of advanced AI/ML systems, edge cloud technologies, large-scale software systems, next-generation networking, and—increasingly—Web3/cryptonetworks technologies. The department brings ideas to life.  Team members typically move their ideas from inception through required fundamental research, into solution development and implementation.  They often prototype and trial their research assets in the field, frequently accelerating this work through partnerships with world-leading research institutions, customers, Nokia’s business units, internal incubation, or spin-out creation channels.  This department is a vibrant, productive organization that needs a new leader to ensure that its current work continues and that its future growth leads to new successes.  The department has members in Murray Hill (NJ, USA), Antwerp (BE), and Stuttgart (DE).

 Mission/Purpose of role

The successful candidate will lead the healthy, productive Autonomous Network Software Research Department forward to a bright future. The candidate will be responsible for ensuring the departments continued success in current programs and for the team’s growth—both recruiting new team members and expanding its research portfolio.  While retaining the department’s focus on autonomous communication solutions, the candidate might expand to new related work. For all topics addressed by this team, the candidate will lead groups of researchers and engineers through creation and evaluation of research assets. These assets may be developed and tested in collaboration with Nokia business groups, internal incubation teams, or spin-out partners. The successful candidate will be a member of the leadership team of the Software and Data Systems Research Lab. In this function, the successful candidate will be involved in shaping and guiding the lab’s larger research agenda, touching on areas such as pervasive computing, embedded AI/ML, ML operations, device software and user experiences, autonomous software creation, agile data processing, Web3, and cryptonetworks. The successful candidate will maintain strong relationships with other stakeholders in the Software and Data Systems Research Lab, the Strategy & Technology organization, and other Nokia Business Groups. The successful candidate will maintain a strong relationship to the world’s best research institutions to attract the talent needed for successful delivery on the research program.

Main Responsibility Areas

  • Define and execute a ground-breaking research program that develops foundational technologies to the infrastructure for future communication services – extending today’s clouds, heavily leveraging AI/ML for relentless automation, and pushing towards open systems with verifiable trust.
  • Lead a team of researchers and engage with partners, customers, academia, and members of the ecosystem to identify research challenges, validate technical solutions, and accelerate business opportunities through technology partnerships, joint proofs-of-concept, business transfers, internal incubation, spin-offs, or licensing opportunities.
  • Actively contribute to and shape the research vision of the larger Software and Data systems Research Lab and identify gaps in the Labs research activities and opportunities around new emerging technology and market trends.
  • Collaborate very closely with other research teams in Bell Labs Solutions Research to create integrated end-to-end solutions.
  • Identify and ensure successful delivery of research outcomes to the Nokia business units, internal incubation teams, or spin-out partners.
  • Establish and maintain a visible role and recognition in the research community to continuously attract world-class talent.

Key Interfaces

  • All other units in Bell Labs Solutions Research, including specifically the five departments in the Software and Data Systems Research Lab and its technical advisors (Think Tank).
  • Nokia Business Groups, in particular the Cloud Network & Services (CNS) group.
  • Strategy and Technology teams, especially Bell Labs Solutions Research, Bell Labs Core Research, Strategic Partnerships, Nokia Standards, Technology Leadership, and Nokia Growth Partners/NGP Capital.

Position Requirements (Experience/Skills/Knowledge)

  • Ph.D. (or equivalent experience) in computer science, data science, electrical engineering, software engineering, mathematics, or related disciplines.
  • Broad understanding of technology, research, and market trends.
  • Broad technical interests and ability to interact with research teams on a wide variety of technical topics relevant to the Software and Data Systems Research Lab.
  • Good understanding of cloud platforms and technologies, AI/ML systems, network protocols, large-scale software systems, and hands on experience with modern software development frameworks.
  • An interest in cryptonetworks and Web3 technologies.
  • Experience with open source.
  • Ability to conduct and lead independent research.
  • Strong research credentials and proven track record of disruptive innovation, with publications in prestigious journals and conferences in relevant fields.
  • Strong record of leadership roles in international research communities, including editorship roles in leading publications, conference organization, and multi-organization collaborations.
  • International reputation and a strong collegial long-term globe-spanning network with a track record of attracting strong talent.
  • Proven track record of research impact through product or services creation, publications, and patents.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Executive presence and ability to interact and present research portfolio to C-suite of the company.
  • Able to influence people at all levels and layers of the organization.
  • Highly motivated to create and realize innovation opportunities for Nokia.
  • Very comfortable working in dynamic, agile, and fast-changing environments.
  • Strong ability to adjust quickly to new market realities.
  • Can-do attitude.
  • Excellent interpersonal, conflict-resolution, and negotiation skills.
