Future Digital Energy Consultant - Bell Labs

We are at the beginning of an era of profound transformation and human progress – a new industrial revolution.  This ‘Automation of Everything’ era will be brought about by digital interfaces and data analytics combined with Bell Labs’ Future X network – a network to support the digitization and connection of everything and everyone with the goal of automating much of life. This is particularly important for making mission-critical energy services highly reliable and highly secure.
The interconnection of renewable energy sources, electric storage devices, distribution automation devices, synchrophasors, power quality regulators, substation automation devices and other digitally-enabled electric grid elements will provide new tools for the automation of electric grids.  The use of augmented intelligence, Augmented Reality, data analytics. And 4G/5G wireless and other technologies will provide utility field forces with new ways of improving operational efficiency and safety.  Pervasive deployment of renewable generation sources, storage and microgrids are creating opportunities for the application of new business models for the delivery of energy services.
The electric utility industry is going through a period of profound disruption.  This disruption creates challenges and opportunities for incumbent energy companies and new entrants alike.
Using the real-world experience you’ve gained from working in the electric power industry, you will work with utilities and other energy companies (e.g., oil and gas) looking to navigate and take advantage of this period of disruption.  You will work with incumbent electric utilities to determine how they can transform their operations through the adoption of Future X network technologies – driving improvements in operational efficiencies, reliability, and safety.  You will determine opportunities for the introduction of new business models and new energy services.
Using your experience and expertise in the power industry, you will:
  • Disruption in utility industry requires new business models.  You will develop framework for such possible business models and have instances of the business models tested with utility customers, where appropriate.
  • Develop models to quantify the costs and benefits of the adoption of Future X networking technologies in the electric power industry.  Because you know firsthand the customers’ challenges, you know where application of Future X technology will have the greatest benefit to the customers’ operations.  You know the opportunities for disruption, and how to achieve it.
  • Develop future-mode architectures and the steps customers should take to achieve them.
  • Engage with CXO-level executives in consulting engagements to understand their business challenges and determine how the Future X network will bring value to their business.  Because you speak the customers’ language, you know how to convey these benefits in and the steps that must be taken to achieve them in ways that compel the customers to action.  You are fluent in technology and business.
  • Create collateral (vision whitepapers, presentations) which clearly demonstrate the possibilities and value of these new technologies in the electric power industry.  You are a master communicator.
  • Drive and contribute to external thought leadership activities.  You will speak at leading industry forums promoting Bell Labs’ future vision for the electric grid of the future.  You speak in ways that excite, inspire and compel action.
  • Lead and participate in consulting engagements with utilities and other energy customers, engagement subject matter experts across Bell Labs Consulting in ways that create significant technical and business impact.  You love getting your hands dirty.


  • Minimum 10 years of real-world experience in the electric power industry, with a focus on the introduction of smart grid technology.
  • In-depth technical expertise in the foundational technologies of today’s and tomorrow’s electric grids.
  • Executive customer engagement capabilities, including ability to communicate in a compelling way, solve problems creatively and partner to find solutions to the customer’s challenges.
  • Ability to explain and evangelize complex technology.  Deep understanding of ICT networks and services and transformation complexities (technology, operations and business economics) and teir applications to electric power industry of present and future 
  • Deep understanding of electric power grids, processes, technological/business drivers.
  • Stature, presence, and credibility, to position consultancies which often need to change customer perceptions and beliefs and so require special tact and savvy
  • Willingness to travel up to two weeks a month.
  • M. Sc., M.S. or Ph.D. in Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent
