Role description:

We are looking for a well-rounded data scientist to join our Strategy & Economic Analysis team at Nokia Technologies. This is a rare opportunity for a business-savvy data scientist to join our strategy team and work on business-critical questions that shape our strategic direction and financial performance for years to come. As a leading IPR licensing business, we operate in a uniquely data-rich strategic environment, where we can leverage droves of data on customers (e.g. market and company data), competitors (e.g. patent and company data), technologies (e.g. patent and standardization data), and business operations (e.g. financial and operational data) to guide our strategy development and decision making. We favor a highly analytical approach to strategy and are looking to expand our data science and decision intelligence capabilities. What you will learn and contribute to

Key tasks and responsibilities:

The Data Scientist leverages fit-for-purpose quantitative methods (e.g. statistics, machine learning, econometrics, optimization, simulation, etc.) to deliver strategic insights, solve strategic business problems, and support analytical strategy development and decision making. The Data Scientist collaborates closely with colleagues from across Nokia Technologies and significantly contributes to our business group strategy, a range of functional strategies, as well as various cross-functional strategic projects. The Data Scientist is expected to help shape the agenda and drive tangible strategic impact in several key areas.

Advanced analytics for competitive intelligence

  • Deliver insight into the composition and development of our competitive patent landscape
  • Develop and validate new metrics and methods for quantifying and comparing patent portfolios
  • Analyze differences and changes in competitor patenting and portfolio management behaviors

Advanced analytics for market intelligence

  • Leverage advanced analytics to deliver new insight into market trends and dynamics
  • Develop forecasting models to create granular market and company sales predictions
  • Create models to quantify and forecast our business opportunity and financial performance

Strategic decision intelligence and optimization

  • Build fit-for-purpose analytical models to evaluate strategic options and scenarios
  • Develop optimization models to guide portfolio strategy and investment decisions
  • Develop advanced prescriptive analytical models to inform critical business decisions

Expert support for licensing and litigation

  • Provides expert support on statistical theory and estimation for licensing and litigations needs
  • Collaborates with Economist colleagues to ensure quality and robustness of statistical evidence


Your skills and experience

  • Rigorous academic training in a quantitative discipline (M.Sc. or PhD in applied mathematics, statistics, physics, economics, finance, operations research, computer science, etc.)
  • Strong business acumen and proven capabilities in applying quantitative methods (e.g. statistics, machine learning, econometrics, simulation, optimization, etc.) to solve complex problems
  • Strong command of statistical theory and practice (e.g. sampling theory, stochastic processes, statistical forecasting, frequentist and Bayesian statistical inference, hypothesis testing, etc.)
  • Ability to deliver clean code (e.g. R, Python) and error-free findings in a fast-paced setting
  • Experience from working with different data types, formats, architectures, and services
  • Proven track-record of delivering excellent results in demanding project environments
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to operate effectively at different levels of abstraction
  • Able to handle complex concepts and translate analyses into actionable recommendations
  • Ability to synthesize and summarize key findings in ways that are easy to communicate
  • Highly proficient in producing top-drawer visualization and presentations to management
  • Team player with ability and drive to independently produce quality deliverables on tight deadlines
  • Excellent written and communication skills in English
  • Prior experience from working with patent data considered a major asset
