Job Description:
 
This is a summer internship position
 
We are entering an era of cloudification and softwarization of networks, enabled by breakthrough technologies such as software-defined networks (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV). With the advent of Internet of Things (IoT), billions of user devices need to be seamlessly managed and automatically onboarded with trust using a common network infrastructure. Human operators can no longer efficiently manage such a large-scale network manually. Thus, we need network and service automation where network management and control decisions are made autonomously and in real-time.
 
To reach the holy grail of end-to-end network automation, we need innovations and new research ideas in multiple areas, e.g., truly programmable data plane, abstraction of control complexity and more intelligent automation. We need formal verification to automatically verify correctness and performance of network operations end-to-end and across multiple layers. The traditional model-based approaches for routing and traffic engineering need to be replaced by model-free machine learning based methods. We need efficient network representation languages that allow automated reasoning about network behavior and automated decision making for self-optimization and self-healing of networks. Automated management of large-scale multi-domain networks (wireless, cellular, IP/optics) require distributed, hierarchical and federated control planes for scale which brings challenges of distributed coordination, and hierarchical control of network resources. We need theoretical innovations in machine learning, optimization, control theory, game theory, formal methods, and algorithms to solve these challenging problems. With integrated efforts in all these areas, we can finally reach our holy grail of ‘zero touch networking’, where access to network infrastructure is as seamless as tapping into utilities such as water and electricity, which we now take for granted in our daily lives.
 
Key Tasks:
 
We are looking for talented and highly motivated students (with theoretical background in machine learning, optimization, control theory, game theory, algorithms, formal methods, graph theory) to work on hard theoretical problems related (but not limited) to:
(1) architecture, algorithms, optimization, and control for end-to-end network orchestration and automation.
(2) end-to-end network and distributed systems verification using formal methods.
(3) AI/ML based resource management & orchestration for networks and clouds; (4) Multi-{domain, layer} network representation and modeling
(5) Distributed and federated coordination of SDN control plane, distributed robotic systems, and IoT.

 

Qualifications and Skills:

 

Familiarity with at-least one programming language (preferably Java, Python)

  • Expertise in at-least on theoretical area (machine learning, optimization, formal methods, game theory, control theory, algorithms and complexity)
  • General mathematical maturity
  • Good grasp of Unix fundamentals
  • Good technical writing and presentation skills
  •  

    Education Requested: 

     

    Must be pursuing a degree in Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Biophysics, Business Modeling, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Economics, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Microbiology, Nanotechnology, Operations Research, Physics, Statistics, Systems Engineering and Telecommunications from an accredited college/university.

     
    Education:
    Enrolled in a PhD program in computer science, computer engineering or electrical engineering.

     

    Student Criteria:

    Overall GPA of 3.0/4.0 or above.

    Must be enrolled as a full-time student.

     

    Work Authorization: 

    U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident preferred.  Will accept students on F-1 Visa dependent upon program requirements or may consider sponsoring short-term J1 Visa PhD students dependent upon program requirements.
