The team you'll be part of

The AI Semantic Reasoning and Understanding (AI-SR&U) team creates ground-breaking research in various areas of spatial computing, namely visual localization, semantic segmentation and scene understanding for industrial environments, with the long term mandate to put together the enablers of an industrial metaverse with a strong emphasis on intertwining the physical with the digital. We are part of the AI Research Lab with an established record of ground-breaking research into problems of direct industrial and scientific impact.

Nokia Bell Labs is the world-renowned research arm of Nokia, having invented many of the foundational technologies that underpin information and communications networks and all digital devices and systems. This research has produced nine Nobel Prizes, five Turing Awards and numerous other awards.


What you will learn and contribute to

We are looking for researchers able to advance the state of the art in technologies for the industrial metaverse and put them into use in the context of building industrial metaverses. 
Successful candidates are able to build and scale prototypes using technologies ranging from 

  • computer vision algorithms for 3D computational photography to neural rendering
  • scene reconstruction to computational imaging
  • visual-inertial odometry, state estimation, sensor fusion, mapping and localization to natural language processing, language grounding and interaction technologies

In your work, you will focus on key aspects of these technologies, create research papers, patent applications and research prototypes. In addition, you will broadly cooperate with Bell Labs researchers from our lab and other research labs, working on distinct aspects of the metaverse to advance the state of the art in research, with development teams on taking your prototypes to the next level of maturity and towards productization. You will also collaborate with architects and technical leads from our business units.


Your skills and experience

You would be a great fit for this role if you had:

  • PhD degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Applied Mathematics, or a related field (e.g., Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing)
  • Strong research record in top conferences/journals dealing with technologies relevant for the metaverse
  • Background in data science, experience in developing AI/ML applications
  • Experience with software development with one or more general programming languages (e.g., Java, C/C++, C#, Python, JavaScript, or Go)


It would be nice if you also had:

  • Excellent written communication skills, and excellent verbal skills, possibly manifested through videos of your talks (from conferences, seminars, TED talks, keynote speeches, interviews or any other types of public videos of you as a technical person/researcher)
  • Innate curiosity to continuously learn, deepen and widen your skills and propensity to relentlessly follow the state of the art in your field of research
  • Strong self-motivation to continuously innovate
  • Proven record of coding skills in technologies relevant for the metaverse, materialized in either a Github (or other) account, with a healthy mix and number of meaningful contributions, or authorship of papers with code etc
